CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Detective Goldings was on the phone the very second they came out of the hospital.

“I hear you’re on the move. Where are you going?”

Iris sat with Lucy at the back of an unmarked 4x4 driven by one of the officers in charge of her protection. His colleague was on the front seat, head swivelling slowly, his eyes constantly scanning the traffic in front and to the sides of them from behind a pair of dark sunglasses.

“I’m going away for a couple of days,” Iris informed the senior detective. “A private residence with lots of security. Your men won’t have to stay. How did it go in Santa Monica?”

“We didn’t hit pay dirt this time round, but we’ll keep at it. Ms Sinclair, forgive me for insisting, but are you sure about this place you’re telling me about?”

Iris decided to cut to the chase. Lucy was right next to her, sitting close, holding her hand in hers in a reassuring grip. She deserved her full attention.

“Have you heard of Damien Cummings?” she asked.

“The producer? Hell, sure, I have. Who hasn’t, uh?”

“I’ll be staying at Damien’s house, enjoying his hospitality. A private security team will be on hand.”

Goldings knew for sure that any security detail the multi-billionaire could provide would far exceed the level required to keep Iris safe. Or even probably a small country.

“Well, all right,” he conceded. “If that’s the case, it should be more than fine, then.”

“I’ll keep my phone on in case you need to reach me. And just to be sure again: there will be a police officer on duty at the hospital at all times, right? Nobody should be allowed in Beth’s room other than her approved medical team.”

Iris was keen to check and double-check this.

“Yes, Ms Sinclair,” Goldings confirmed. “We will keep it tight at the hospital. Speak to you soon, okay? Hopefully with some good news.”

“Okay, thanks.”

He hung up, and Iris gave a small shake of the head.

“Everything all right with him?” Lucy enquired.

“Yes. Everything’s fine. Don’t worry.”

She flashed her a brief, confident smile, and yet Lucy could feel a hint of tension in her voice, and she suspected that she knew why.

“You know, we don’t really need to do this,” she remarked with a light shrug. “We could stay with Beth at the hospital if it made you feel more comfortable. I’d be happy with that. I’m not here for a holiday.”

“Are you sure?” Iris wondered.

“Of course, I am.” Lucy gave her fingers a gentle squeeze. “I just came to be with you, and help out in any way I can. So, it’s fine, wherever we are.”

Iris brushed a single kiss over her cheek.

“You’re an angel,” she murmured. “But no, it’s all good. I think I do need a break from the hospital, and it makes sense to have it before they bring Beth back.”

“Okay, great,” Lucy agreed. “And it does makes sense.”

She glanced out the car window at the long lines of vehicles that still surrounded them, and raised an ironic eyebrow.
